Flames Sweep Smitties In Dramatic Fashion 9-5 and 8-1

Sherrill, NY July 2, 2018: A determined Onondaga Flames team stormed into Sherrill  for a 7-inning doubleheader looking to clinch the Eastern Division regular season title and the top playoff seed. Trailing 5-2 going into the top of the seventh (and final) inning of the first game, the Flames refused to lose and mounted a dramatic 7-run rally to secure an improbable 9-5 victory. The Big O then took care of business in the nightcap 8-1 to secure a first place finish.

Game One

The Silversmiths jumped on top with three home runs over the Noyes Field’s notorious short right field fence. Sherrill hurler Michael Mathews (Salve Regina) held the Flames in check scattering five hits over 5.1 innings for two runs on an RBI single by Corbin Paxton (Lake Erie College) and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Hart (Bryant University),

Last Inning Dramatics

The Flames mounted their most dramatic rally of the season in the top of the 7th. Singles by McClain O’Connor (UC Santa Barbara) and Mike Steffan (Canisius College) followed by a walk to Hart loaded the bases with no outs ,setting the stage for the dramatics that followed. The red hot Collin Mathews (Kent State) singled home O’Connor and Steffan The reliable A.J DiFillipo (Columbia University) pulled a line drive double down the right field line to score Hart and move Mathews to third. After Trace Peterson (Lake Erie College) walked to again load the bases, Adam Gordon (Cal State LA) lashed double in the gap to score Mathews and DiFillipo.

Corbin Paxton, the ninth batter in the inning, walked and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. McClain O’Connor brought home Gordon and advanced Paxton to third with his second single of the inning. Paxton then scored the last run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Mike Steffan.

Flames All-Star closer Keon Taylor (Cal State LA) put the Smitties down in order striking out two of the three batters he faced on nine pitches, all of them strikes.

The Flames improved to 25-13 with the win.

Game Two

Connor Morrisroe

Flames starter Connor Morrisroe set the tone for the second game with a strong 5 inning 3-.hit shutout stint on the mound.as the Flames built an 8-0 lead for reliever Chris Burnette (Cal Pol Pomona) who retired the Silversmiths in order in the sixth on two strikeouts and a come-backer. In an effort to conserve arms for the playoffs, the Flames sent outfielder Adam Gordon to the mound to close out the game.

In the first inning, the Flames picked up where they left off in the first game scoring a run on a walk to Reid Gibbs (Chapman University) who advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on AJ DiFillipo’s single. Corbin Paxton extended his hitting streak to four games (6 hits in last four) with a one-out single in the top of the second and. advanced on Jack Chernow’s  (Columbia University) one-bagger. Mike Netzel, (Occidental College)  the Flames all-purpose Swiss Army Knife, in the lineup at third base, singled Paxton home putting the Flames ahead 2-0.

The fourth inning brought two more runs for the Flames as Reid Gibbs (Chapman University) smashed a lead off homer over the left center field fence. Netzel followed up with a single and later scored on an error to put the Flames in front 4-0.

Flames hitters played long-ball in the sixth inning. After consecutive walks to Netzel and DiFillipo, Collin Mathews went yard for three more runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Jake Zurat (Canisius College), back from an injury, added a solo dinger to close out the Flames scoring.

The Flames improved to 26-13 for a league-leading .667 winning percentage. (Since reaching full strength, the Flames are 23-7 for .766,)
