Flames Split With Generals 6-9, 7-4

Rome, NY July 21, 2018: The Onondaga Flames playing their second doubleheader in a row last night, split with the hard-hitting Rome Generals at DeLutis Field, losing the opener 9-6 and then recovering to claim the nightcap 7-4  

Opener

The Flames fell behind in the opening inning 1-0 and after a 2-run second, surrender ed the lead for good when Rome scored 4 runs in the top of the 4th on 4 hits and 2 errors, The Generals scored what proved to be the winning margin in the fifth inning, scoring 3 runs on four its and another Flames error.

The never-quit Flames rallied in the bottom of the 6th of the 7-inning game scoring three runs on a wak by AJ DiFillipo (Columbia University), consecutive singles by Jake Zurat (Canisius College) and McClain O’Connor (UC Santa Barbara) and a bases loaded double by Adam Gordon (Cal State LA).

The Flames threatened again in the bottom of the seventh when Bryan Hart (Bryant University)  lead off with a triple and scored on a double by Zurat. However, the Flames could not close the gap and the loss dropped them to 26-14 on th season.

Nightcap

Trailing -2 in the fifth inning, the Flames loaded the bases with two outs when Joe Novenche (Canisus College Commit) walked to drive in the tying run, A walk to Collin Mathews (Kent State) brought in the go ahead run setting the stage for the red hot Corbin Paxron (Lake Erie College. The lefty first basemen blasted a double over the head of the right fielder to clear the bases to give the Flames a 6-3 lead. Paxton, plagued with an ankle sprain most of the season, has now hit safely in his last five games with 8 hits.

The Flames bullpen preserved the win for starter Casey Kretsch (LeMoyne) who scattered four hits and allowed only two earned runs. Holden Martina (Muskingum University) alowed one hit and no runs in his 2/3 innings and Nick Garcia (Chapman University), one of the Flames 90+mph hurlers, struck out three batters in the 6th inning setting the stage for Flames closer Keon Taylor (Cal State LA) who set the Generals in order to save the Flames 27th victory n the season versus 14 losses.

The Flames travel to Cortland to play the Crush at 2:00 PM at Beaudry Park in the last game of the regular season.
