Flames Player Profile #9 Mike Netzel, Occidental College

One of the most talented and versatile players in the league, Mike Netzel is a rare commodity in college baseball – a pitcher with a strong bat who can double as a designated hitter. Not only does Mike bat for himself when on the mound, he also DH’s when not in the lineup as a pitcher or right fielder.

Mike Netzel
Occidental College

The Culver City, CA native has appeared in 5 games on the bump, 4 as a starter. Over the 25.2 innings pitched he has allowed 27 hits and only 9 earned runs for a 3.15 ERA. Netzel is noted for his control as evidenced by his 29 strikeouts (an average of 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings) versus only 5 base on balls .A rising junior at Occidental College, Mike has a WHIP of 1.25 and has held opponents to a .267 batting average.

As good as he is on the mound, it can be argued that he is even better as a position player. A sure-handed right fielder with a big accurate arm, he has gunned down runners going from first to third and trying to score on sac flies. (Opponents don’t try it anymore.)

Netzel has a slash line of .330/.504/.404, which makes him one of the better hitter on the team.

This gifted athlete is an invaluable member of the Flames and a key part of the team’s success.

Flames Player Profile #5 Bryan Hart, Bryant University

Bryan Hart  photo courtesy of Roger Hagen

The workhorse of the 2018 Onondaga Flames, Bryan Hart has played in 32 of the Flames’ 35 games so far this season. He has the most plate appearances (137) and at bats (111) of any Flames player. The sturdy Bryant Bulldog seems to be getting stronger as the season progresses witnessed by his last 7 days slash line of .313/.389/.563.

#5 Bryan Hart
Bryant University

Hart, a rising junior at Bryant University, packs a surprising amount of power in his 6’2″ 195 lbs. frame. Almost half of his 30 hits have been for extra bases – 9 doubles, 4 triples and 1 home run. (Bear in mind those triples might have been over the fence at other ballparks.) A power line drive hitter, Hart boasts a season slash line of  .270/.394/.450 – impressive, especially for a middle infielder.

Talented with the glove, Bryan has played second, short, third, outfield and DH at D1 Bryant University of the highly competitive Northeast Conference. Hart’s big arm has allowed the Flames to use him at third as well as his more natural position at short and second. Bryan has been a big key to the Flames’ success this year.

Personal
The son of John and Janet Hart of Franklin, MA, Bryan has one brother, Neal, who played two years of baseball at Roger Williams.

A.J. DiFillipo
Columbia

AJ DeFillipo (Columbia University), who has now hit safely in 11-straight games, was perfect at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance, including a triple and four runs batted in. The Flames welcome back Jake Zurat (Canisius College) from the injury list and Josh Rosario (Dutchess CC), RHP filling in for the injured Jeff DeStefano (Canisius).

Flames Win – Improve to 21-13 – Magic Number Now 6

Onondaga, NY July 16, 2018: Jeremy Taylor (Cal Poly Pomona) scattered seven hits and allowed a single run over 7-innings, which was all the Flames needed last night at OCC baseball complex. The Flames hitters scored two runs on two hits in the first and never looked back as they erupted for 11 more hits and eight more runs to claim a 10-3 victory over the Sherrill Silversmiths. The win puts the Flames one-step closer to the Eastern Divisional crown. Their magic number is now 6 (any combination of Flames wins and Cortland Losses totaling six, wins for the Flames).

Flames hitters played played power ball for 7 runs on doubles by McClain O’Connor (UC Santa Barbara) and a pair by AJ DiFillipo (Columbia University) as well as a triple by Adam Gordon (Cal State LA).  Collin Mathews (Kent State) continued his hot bat with a 2 for 4 night and Mike Ruggerio, finally back from a hamstring injury earlier in the season, had three singles.

The Flames are back in action today at 2:00 PM as they host the Syracuse Spartans.

Flames Beat Salt Cats 5-3

Onondaga, NY July 12, 2018: The Onondaga Flames increased their lead in the Eastern Division of the NYCBL last night at Onondaga Community College baseball complex beating division rival Syracuse Salt Cats 5-3, while the second place Syracuse Spartans and Sherrill Silversmiths both lost. After suffering from two straight shutout losses, the Flames rebounded for the win as Mike Netzel (Occidental College) scattered six hits for one run in his six innings on the mound.  The Flames league-leading bullpen, while not as dominating as we have come to expect; nevertheless proved equal to the task once again as Casey Kretsch (Le Moyne College), Jimmy Flahive (American International College) and Nick Garcia (Chapman University) closed out the Salt Cats with only two runs to preserve the victory.

Mike Netzel

After giving up one-run on a pair of singles and a fielder’s choice in the first inning, Netzel shut out the Salt Cats over the next five innings allowing only four hits and two walks, while striking out six.

The Flames evened the score in the bottom half of the second inning when Collin Mathews (Kent State) doubled and scored on two fielder’s choices. They went ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Evans (Binghamton University, Netzel and Bryan Hart (Bryant University) all walked to load the bases with one out. Evans and Netzel both scored on Collin Mathews single, his second hit of the night to open a 3-1 lead. Hart scored on a fielder’s choice by AJ DiFillipo (Columbia University) to put the Flames in front 4-1.

Collin Mathews

The Salt Cats scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh and the Flames answered with one of their own in the bottom of the eighth to leave the score at 5-2. The Salt Cats rallied for one run in the top of the ninth, scoring on singles by Sean Lawlor (Flagler College) who was 4 for 4 on the night and Mike Nertz (Abilene Christian), a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice. Nick Garcia ended the threat with a strike out for the final out of the game.

The Flames improve to 18-13 with 11 games remaining in the regular season. They are off today and resume action when they travel to Rome on Friday before returning home against the Syracuse Spartans on Saturday at OCC at 6:00 PM.

Widely recognized as one of the premier collegiate summer baseball leagues in the nation, the PGCBL is a wood bat development league for aspiring major leaguers. The league was founded in the fall of 2010 by eight summer baseball teams located across upstate New York in conjunction with Perfect Game USA, baseball’s largest scouting service. The league’s first season was completed in the summer of 2011.

In March of 2018, the PGCBL announced a new President and Vice President to guide the league into the future. Former New York Penn League President Robert Julian was named President, and longtime right-hand man and Utica College head baseball coach Joe Milazzo was named Vice President.

“The league has made great strides in the last 18 months and is poised for an exciting future,” said Alyce Lee, co-owner of the Flames, “we are thrilled to be resuming play in the PGCBL”

The Flames’ home field is the Onondaga Community College baseball complex located on the corner of Onondaga Road and Collegiate Drive in Onondaga, New York.
