Mike Cordero Named Flames New Head Coach

Onondaga, NY August 14, 2017: The Onondaga Flames announced today that Mike Cordero will be their new Head Coach for the 2018 summer season. Cordero, currently Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at Santa Barbara City College, has over 13 years of coaching experience ranging from high school to NCAA Division 1 levels. Over his career, Mike has coached in the postseason 11 times, winning six league championships. He has had over a dozen players playing professionally.

“Mike is a bright young coach with a record of excellence wherever he has coached. His fast paced, stress the defense style of play should be well-suited to the turf field at OCC.” remarked Wayne Walker, Flames president, “we are all excited he will be leading the Flames.”

Head Coach of Nationally Ranked HS Teams

A highly successful high school coach, Mike’s teams at Loyola High School (Los Angeles) and Agoura High School (Agoura Hills, CA) earned national rankings.

While Head Coach at Loyola, his teams won a Mission League title and were ranked as high as No. 9 nationally. Additionally, Cordero’s program produced a Perfect Game and First Team All-American, Team USA Participant, MLB draft pick and more than 25 college players.

Prior to Loyola, Cordero was the head coach at Agoura High School where he inherited a program that finished in last place the previous five years and within two years, the Chargers won back-to-back Marmonte League championships. The 2013 team was ranked #1 in the Los Angeles Times polls and as high as 6th in the nation according to Baseball America.

Assistant Coach at Powerhouse Cypress College

In 2009, Cordero served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at national powerhouse Cypress College. He played a strong role in developing numerous Division 1 infielders and two Junior College All-Americans. Mike’s recruiting classes helped produce a top-10 national ranking for Cypress in 2010 and a 2009 Orange Empire Conference championship.

Charleston Southern

In 2008, Mike served as the infield and hitting coach at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. While at CSU he assisted in developing three Division 1 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans and helped the Buccaneers make the Big South Conference Tournament. At CSU, he had the privilege of coaching Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, Tyler Thornburg.

Cordero received a B.A. in Marketing from Upper Iowa University and a Master’s of Science in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University. He lives in San Gabriel, CA with his wife, Monica and their two children, Juliette (8), Noelle (4)..

Flames Matt Bowman Honored As PGCBL All-League Selection

Onondaga, NY August 15, 2017: The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announced today that the Flames relief pitcher Matt Bowman (SUNY Broome) has been selected to the 2017 Season All-League second team as a relief pitcher. Bowman, the Flames closer, appeared in 17 games, pitched 25 innings and allowed only 6 earned runs to post a 3-2 won-lost record and log 7 saves. Matt struck out 20 while only walking 11. The big right-hander struck out 20 while walking only 11 and allowed 25 hits with only 3 going for extra bases.

Matt Bowman

Bowman threw a strike on the first-pitch to batters 70% of the time, one of the most critical stats for a relief pitcher.
